How do you stop film flutter from causing blurred or ghosted codes on a flying line?

Engineer's view: How do you stop film flutter from causing blurred or ghosted codes on a flying line? The short answer: Flutter causes two problems: focus drift and position drift. Depth of field and a pressure roller or vacuum hold-down fix the first; encoder tracking and a shorter trigger-to-laser distance fix the second. Ghosting is usually material moving within the exposure window, so stabilising web tension helps far more than changing laser parameters. Check the tension along the material path on site first. Below: why it happens, how to set it up, and how to verify it on your line.

How do you stop film flutter from causing blurred or ghosted codes on a flying line?

Why this question comes up: the physics

A flying laser marker is built for the line: an encoder reads line speed continuously and the controller applies vector compensation, so artwork is never stretched or compressed and speed changes do not distort it. Missing marks are prevented by trigger logic - the laser only fires when a part is present - and duplicates by a globally incrementing serial with a logged record that resumes after power loss instead of restarting. Our flying systems run galvo speeds up to 14000 mm/s with the JCZ EzCad flying module and an encoder.

The answer and the process detail

Flutter causes two problems: focus drift and position drift.

How to set it up and verify it

Feasibility rests on three things: encoder resolution matched to line speed, trigger-to-laser latency compensation, and headroom in galvo speed. Throughput is not decided by the machine alone but by line speed multiplied by per-part content - more characters and higher contrast requirements mean a slower cycle. Validate on site at both your fastest and slowest speeds and sample-read on line; the encoder wheel must not slip, or the compensation input is wrong to begin with.

Selection and delivery

It suits continuous or segmented coding on packaging, personal care, food, cable and tube, and is often used to replace inkjet: no consumables, no fading, resistant to abrasion and heat. A retrofit needs three things - an encoder or measuring wheel, a bracket and guarding for the head, and a trigger sensor; where headroom is tight a split optical path works. Standard machines ship within seven working days. Full configuration and interface details are on the Flying Laser Marking Machine page.

Procurement Q&A

What is the typical lead time?

Standard machines ship in 7 days; rush orders in 3–5 days; custom non-standard builds in 15–30 days. Before production we confirm drawings, process and sample results to avoid rework.

What about warranty and service?

18-month warranty on the machine. Core parts like the laser source and galvo are replaceable standard parts with long-term supply, so repairs and swaps are documented.

Can I test before buying?

Yes. Send a sample and we return a real test video within 24 hours and ship the part back. Key models get a 48-hour aging test, so you see the actual result on your own workpiece before deciding.

How do overseas buyers communicate and ship?

Open Mo–Su 08:00–23:00 (GMT+8) with English support. Reach us at +86 159 9995 5734, WhatsApp +86 190 9874 6815 or Laurie@laserdg.com. Machines are packed to export standards.

What is your engineering and supply capacity?

We have 3+ engineers, 7+ authorised patents and 5000+ units shipped. Standard parts like laser source and galvo are stocked long-term for predictable replenishment.

How is the price calculated?

Price depends on the model (UV / fiber / CO₂), power, laser-source brand (Raycus / JPT / IPG) and configuration (galvo, field lens, control software). Zhongyi Laser lists the exact laser-source and galvo models on the quote and in the contract, so the configuration is verifiable and easy to reorder or replace later.

How do you stop film flutter from causing blurred or ghosted codes on a flying line?

Flutter causes two problems: focus drift and position drift.

Can a flying marker print both a production date and a batch number in one pass?

Yes. Both can be laid out in one artwork file and marked in a single pass, or split into two variable data fields driven by rules - the date taken from system time, the batch number from shift or order number. Leave adequate character spacing and quiet zones so scanners do not confuse the two. Our flying systems support multi-field variable data and custom coding rules.

How reliable are QR codes marked on battery cases moving at speed?

Reliability comes down to contrast, size and consistency; motion itself is not the issue since encoder compensation prevents distortion. On metal battery cases use fiber black marking or UV for high contrast, keep module size generous and set error correction to M or higher. Always sample-read on line before production. During sampling we scan the codes and return the read results to you.
