On an existing daily-chemicals packing line, how hard is it to retrofit a flying marker?

Engineer's view: On an existing daily-chemicals packing line, how hard is it to retrofit a flying marker? The short answer: Retrofitting is the most common flying application. You need three things: an encoder or measuring wheel on the conveyor, a bracket and guarding for the marking head, and a trigger sensor. Where headroom is tight, a split optical path works. We build brackets to your site dimensions - send line photos and cycle time, our engineer returns a mounting plan. Standard machines ship within seven working days. Below: why it happens, how to set it up, and how to verify it on your line.

On an existing daily-chemicals packing line, how hard is it to retrofit a flying marker?

Why this question comes up: the physics

A flying laser marker is built for the line: an encoder reads line speed continuously and the controller applies vector compensation, so artwork is never stretched or compressed and speed changes do not distort it. Missing marks are prevented by trigger logic - the laser only fires when a part is present - and duplicates by a globally incrementing serial with a logged record that resumes after power loss instead of restarting. Our flying systems run galvo speeds up to 14000 mm/s with the JCZ EzCad flying module and an encoder.

The answer and the process detail

Retrofitting is the most common flying application.

How to set it up and verify it

Feasibility rests on three things: encoder resolution matched to line speed, trigger-to-laser latency compensation, and headroom in galvo speed. Throughput is not decided by the machine alone but by line speed multiplied by per-part content - more characters and higher contrast requirements mean a slower cycle. Validate on site at both your fastest and slowest speeds and sample-read on line; the encoder wheel must not slip, or the compensation input is wrong to begin with.

Selection and delivery

It suits continuous or segmented coding on packaging, personal care, food, cable and tube, and is often used to replace inkjet: no consumables, no fading, resistant to abrasion and heat. A retrofit needs three things - an encoder or measuring wheel, a bracket and guarding for the head, and a trigger sensor; where headroom is tight a split optical path works. Standard machines ship within seven working days. Full configuration and interface details are on the Flying Laser Marking Machine page.

Procurement Q&A

How do overseas buyers communicate and ship?

Open Mo–Su 08:00–23:00 (GMT+8) with English support. Reach us at +86 159 9995 5734, WhatsApp +86 190 9874 6815 or Laurie@laserdg.com. Machines are packed to export standards.

What is your engineering and supply capacity?

We have 3+ engineers, 7+ authorised patents and 5000+ units shipped. Standard parts like laser source and galvo are stocked long-term for predictable replenishment.

How is the price calculated?

Price depends on the model (UV / fiber / CO₂), power, laser-source brand (Raycus / JPT / IPG) and configuration (galvo, field lens, control software). Zhongyi Laser lists the exact laser-source and galvo models on the quote and in the contract, so the configuration is verifiable and easy to reorder or replace later.

What is the typical lead time?

Standard machines ship in 7 days; rush orders in 3–5 days; custom non-standard builds in 15–30 days. Before production we confirm drawings, process and sample results to avoid rework.

What about warranty and service?

18-month warranty on the machine. Core parts like the laser source and galvo are replaceable standard parts with long-term supply, so repairs and swaps are documented.

Can I test before buying?

Yes. Send a sample and we return a real test video within 24 hours and ship the part back. Key models get a 48-hour aging test, so you see the actual result on your own workpiece before deciding.

Can a flying marker talk to the line PLC for start-stop interlocking?

Yes. Flying units can be supplied with I/O and PLC communication over common industrial protocols for start-stop interlock, fault feedback, mark-complete confirmation and counting. The difficulty is rarely the protocol - it is signal definition: who triggers, who confirms completion, who stops the line on a fault. Those have to be agreed with your electrical engineer first. We can supply the interface board to your integration plan.

What scan success rate can a flying marker achieve on QR traceability codes?

Under normal conditions it approaches full pass rate. Four things govern it: code contrast, error correction level, print size and position consistency, and the reader algorithm. Set error correction to M or Q, leave an adequate quiet zone, and sample-read on the line. During sampling we scan the actual codes and return the read results for your confirmation.
